2007, #134 (1401) While Azerbaijani officials insisted there was no reason for bread production costs to rise, prices on bread went up 20 percent in some regions of their country. Analyst Chingiz Aliyev says this is the market reaction to jumps in wheat costs in Russia and Kazakhstan, writes the news agency Regnum. Local governments there passed quick measures to keep prices under control, though bread weights fell as bakers battled higher flour costs. Azerbaijan has its own wheat harvest, about 1.2 million tons expected in 2007. The country still needs to import 300 000 to 350 000 tons this year to meet demand |
