Where the River Runs Dirty

The pollution of the Mtkvari River repeatedly arises as a major issue in Georgian–Azerbaijani relationships. The pollution is mainly due to ineffective filtration methods for the country’s sewage systems, reports the newspaper Alia.

In a recent USAID-run seminar in Tbilisi, Azerbaijani hydrogeologist Lidia Kulizade said the problem is expected to peak by 2020.

“By that point, the condition of the Mtkvari will be critical,” warned Kulizade.

Georgian Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources representative Marina Makarova stated that the Mtkvari River is dirtier in Azerbaijani territory than in Georgia.

“Of course the Mtkvari is polluted in Georgia as well, but when it reaches Azerbaijani territory, near the Mingechauri water reservoir, it gets much dirtier,” claimed Makarova
