On July 16, Armenian President Robert Kocharyan reassigned the head of the state tax service to a presidential advisory post. In his place, he appointed head of the Armenian Presidential Control Service Vahram Barseghyan, according to the news agency Regnum.

Armenian Prime Minister Serj Sarkisyan said the former state tax service head himself, Felix Tsolakyan, pushed for the reassignment saying tenure of longer than four years was not appropriate for a tax service head.

During Tsolakyan’s leadership, tax revenues more than doubled, from AMD 120 billion to AMD 280 billion, or about USD 807 million.

The Armenian prime minister added there should be ongoing reforms to the state tax service to increase the country’s take.

“Increasing tax revenues is important for bettering our citizens’ welfare and pushing out the shadow economy. Any black market actions work against the state, and we are responsible for getting rid of these,” said Sarkisyan
