Azerbaijan to Sell More Natural Gas to Georgia for Winter

Azerbaijan is set to export more natural gas to Georgia this fall as production levels ramp up, says the Azerbaijani Ministry of Industry and Energy.

Baku now sends 1.03 million cubic meters of gas to Georgia each day and, according to Russian media, starting this fall the amount is to be nearly doubled as 1 million cubic meters are added to the daily flow.

Azerbaijan signed an export contract with Georgia at the start of this year. Since then, 151 million cubic meters have come across the border.

The natural gas deal was signed as Russia’s Gazprom, a major gas supplier for Georgia, announced it would more than double prices for Tbilisi, charging USD 235 for 1000 cubic meters. Azerbaijani gas costs Georgia USD 120 for 1000 cubic meters, according to the Russian news agency Regnum.

Even the increased flow from Azerbaijan won’t be enough to feed Georgia’s winter gas needs, and more than likely it will be Gazprom that will in large part be making up the deficit
