Ferry Link to Russia Reopening in August

Ferry links between Russia and Georgia could be reopened as early as August 1, reports the news agency Regnum.

Armenian companies, including Railvneshtrans, signed an agreement with a Swedish ferry company. In April, a ferry test run went from Poti to Russia. The connection was put on hold while customs issues were sorted out.

The 250-meter long ferry can hold 340 containers, and will run four times a month. This year, the ferry is expected to help import 120 000 tons of cargo to Armenia, and export 12 000 tons of goods back out.

Armenia has been hurting since Russian cut off trade links with Georgia, with shipments to and from Russia forced to take expensive detours. Several years ago, Armenia pushed for a railway connection through Abkhazia but the plan gained no traction.
