The first peg should be officially hammered in on the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railroad by the end of October this year. Turkish Transportation Minister Ismet Yılmaz said the deadline for the construction tender is the end of August, the news agency Regnum reports.

“The Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway will keep the Silk Road running, and bring Turkey into the 21st century,” stated the minister.

The minister said that the railroad could possibly link with tracks in Erzurum, allowing for trains to go all the way to London.

The first session of the railway’s coordination council convened in Baku on July 18.
