Socioeconomic inequality in Georgia critical

Social inequality in Georgia has increased dramatically, seriously threatening the stability of the country, according to the Georgian Institute of Strategy and Development (STanD).

The gap between the wealthy and poor sections of society is dangerously large, says STanD, as incomes in Georgia are extremely polarized. Research conducted by the Statistics Department shows that 32 percent of employees receive a monthly salary of less than GEL 100. Around 19 000 Georgians are living on GEL 20 per month.

Bearing in mind the unemployment rate is around 29 per cent, and that pensions are often as little as GEL 15 per month, many Georgians are faced with severe financial problems. Experts say economic inequality could provoke protests if the government doesn't address the problem.
