Engurhesi financial problems no accident, journalists allege

Journalists are accusing Tbilisi officials of pushing the Engurhesi power plant into bankruptcy, writes the newspaper Sakartvelos Respublika.

Tengiz Chkikvadze and Valeri Lisochenko of an investigative journalism outfit called Time and Space assert that in 2006, Minister of Energy Nika Gilauri ordered Engurhesi to supply Abkhazia with 1.1 billion kilowatts of electricity annually, a third of the total output of the plant. The separatist administration does not pay for the energy, leaving the plant's management in the red.

The power station's debt, the journalists claim, increased to GEL 300 million from 2002 to 2007.

The journalists argue that Gilauri is putting Engurhesi under financial pressure to serve the interests of Czech company EnergoPro Georgia.
