Environmental protection agreement signed with Batumi oil terminal

By Ana Kvrivishvili

On August 20, Environment Minister Davit Tkeshelashvili and the Greenoak Group inked an agreement on tackling environmental problems in Batumi.

Greenoak Group owns the Batumi oil terminal and sea port; the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources will work with them to patch up current ecological problems and prevent future ones.

"We were able to listen to the plans that the terminal leadership had…and we are satisfied," Tkheshelashvili reported.

"Our main aim," the minister added, "is to create a safe environment and the memorandum…is one more step in that direction."

While there have been no publicized ecological disasters around the Black Sea port town, Batumi's waters are not known for their pristine condition-a troublesome reputation for a resort town looking to build its tourism industry.

The head of Greenoak Group in Georgia, Mogens Hansen, promised the company would spend the money needed to make their enterprises environmentally friendly.

"There is a lot of attention paid to ecological issues at Batumi Oil Terminal and Batumi Sea Port," Hansen said.

Tkeshelashvili added that similar agreements would be signed with other companies this year.
