The Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Affairs announced yesterday a country-wide information campaign about diabetes to teach people about the metabolic disorder and how to prevent it. What do you know about diabetes? Does anyone in your family have diabetes?

"I think a campaign to raise public awareness on diabetes would be useful. I don't know too much about, just that you can get it from either a genetic disposition, or an unhealthy lifestyle."
Nino, public relations worker, 27

"I know that diabetes is a dangerous and complicated disease, it can do a lot of damage to organs. Once a patient needs insulin it becomes very difficult to live with."
Sopo, student, 20

"I know someone who suffers from diabetes, she's insulin dependent. It's difficult to say how people get this, but this girl became ill in her teens. Based on the observation of my acquaintance, I think after taking some training courses and gaining emergency skills she is more or less adapted to it."
Irakli, lawyer, 35

"I know that this disease can be inborn, genetic I mean, and also can come from a lot of bodily stress, or cigarettes in some cases. I know you need special food for it."
Aleko, student, 20

"I don't have any in my family, but neighbors have diabetes and they're always getting treatment. It's very bad, I wish no one had it."
Diko, dentist, 32

"Diabetes is a metabolic disorder-my grandfather has it, but it's not too bad for him."
Keti, journalist, 27

"My grandma has had diabetes for five years. She lost weight, but with a doctor's help she's managed to regulate the disease. She doesn't need insulin yet."
Natia, student, 19

"I've heard that diabetes is a disease where the amount of sugar in the blood decreases or increases. Fortunately, none of my relatives have it."
Maia, housewife, 51

"My mom's aunt died from diabetes. She did everything to prolong her life, stayed on a diet, but it didn't work. But I know a person who's had it for seven years, and amazingly is okay. It's a strange disease."
Salome, hairdresser, 31
