Georgians skeptical of Saakashvili’s anti-corruption task force, survey suggests

After former defense minister Irakli Okruashvili accused President Saakashvili and his family of involvement in corruption—allegations Okruashvili has since recanted—the president announced the establishment of an anti-corruption task force.

The task force will monitor government ministries and carry out checks on MPs and their families. However, opposition politicians have taken issue at the fact that it will report directly to the president himself, suggesting that the task force will not be impartial as a result.

A recent poll suggests that over half of the country thinks the creation of the task force is simply a PR stunt.

The newspaper Kviris Palitra put the question, “What do you think is the real reason for creating an anticorruption council?” to 417 Georgians.
