Georgia ranks 66th in an annual press freedom index published by Reporters Without Borders, up from 89th place in last year’s index.

Armenia was ranked 77 and Azerbaijan 139, according to the news agency Regnum.

The South Caucasus showed signs of progress, commentators said, although Azerbaijan has dropped four places since the 2006 index was published.

The ten top-ranked states were Iceland, Norway, Estonia, Slovenia, Belgium, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland, and Portugal. The US is placed at 48th.
