Bread prices set to rise again

Bread prices are set to increase again this winter, with analysts predicting the cost of a loaf to rise by GEL 0.05–0.10. The expected price increase is due to increasing wheat prices on the international market compounded by rising water and electricity costs in Georgia.

As part of the government’s current one-off social assistance program, sacks of flour are being given out to some 700 000 rural families living in the regions.

Georgia grows only 20 percent of its wheat requirement, relying on imports for the rest, according to the newspaper Rezonansi.

Prime Minister Zurab Noghaideli commented that Georgia is in talks with Azerbaijan, Ukraine and Kazakhstan to secure the wheat imports needed for the social assistance program. Petre Tsiskarishvili, Minister of Agriculture, has traveled to Baku to discuss the matter, the news agency Regnum reports
