The government has suspended Imedi TV’s broadcast license for, they say, airing statements on November 7 inciting protestors to violently overthrow the state. Is the suspension of Imedi TV’s license justified?

November 15

“I think this is the wrong decision. The government is cracking down on free speech and the truth. They don’t want Imedi back on air because it’s showing people what’s really going on in Georgia.” Keti, student, 20

“Nobody had the right to attack Imedi TV and destroy all the equipment there. And what did the government accomplish by doing that? What did it achieve? It’s not justified at all. The government should compensate the station for damages.” Lana, housewife, 54

“I’m glad they suspended Imedi TV’s broadcasting license. I never liked that channel.” Ana, lawyer, 25

“The government should consider their actions carefully before they make such a serious decision. If they close down Imedi, it will shock people. Most Georgians like Imedi, and don’t want to see it shut down.” Nika, athlete, 30

“The November 2 rally was Imedi’s fault. My family thinks it’s a good thing it won’t be allowed back on-air. They’ve been feeding people falsehoods, making people lose their minds and commit very bad mistakes.” Giga, doctor, 35

“It’s unacceptable to pressure the media. When the state of emergency is canceled, Imedi’s broadcasts should resume immediately.” Lika, interpreter, 27

“The court should decide whether or not there are enough grounds for suspending its license.” Lia, lecturer, 35

“Obviously, this is the government taking revenge on Imedi for being one of the most powerful oppositional voices in the country. Shutting them down is violating the freedom of the media, and I think the international community should respond firmly to this.” Elene, manager, 33

“Imedi is the best and most objective of Georgia’s television networks. I love and respect its journalists very much, especially Inga Grigolia. The suspended its license for political reasons, and nothing else.” Gigi, student, 20
