“Public school won’t have heating problems”

Akhali Taoba writes that the Ministry of Education and Science promises no Georgian public schools will go cold this winter.

About 430 public schools in major towns have had heating systems installed or fixed up, the ministry states.

Rural schools are getting by with firewood, the ministry adds, some making their purchases with aid from the government.

“Koba Subeliani becomes vice-president of a Georgian dog federation”

The nominee for the refugees and resettlement ministership, Koba Subeliani, will also be ascending to another post soon, Rezonansi writes: vice president of the Georgian Cynological Federation, a society for dog sports and breeding.

Tbilisi City Hall, where Subeliani is head of the City Maintenance service, released that information on November 19.

According to the federation’s founder and president, Gio Giorgadze, Subeliani has been interested in all things canine for a long time. His ascendancy to the cabinet certainly wouldn’t hurt the federation’s interests, either.

“He can assist our federation in certain issues… We are trying to include the Georgian Nagazi [Caucasian sheepdog] in the International Cynological Federation’s registration book. We plan to organize an exhibition of the traditional Georgian Nagazi in Februarye next year,” Giorgadze explained on Tuesday.

Last year, around 340 Georgian Nagazi dogs participated in the exhibition.

The Cynological Federation of Georgia was created in 1994, and now includes eight dog clubs.

“Temur Shashiashvili calls on opposition to boycott the early presidential election”

Akhali Taoba reports that oppositional Forward, Georgia leader Temur Shashiashvili is calling for a boycott of the January 5 presidential election.

By setting the surprise election at such an early date, Shashiashvili claims, the president is trying to manipulate the public into voting him back into office.

“I want to address the opposition, and all Georgians: first, the opposition should remove its presidential candidates and boycott Saakashvili’s regime. Second, later on a binding referendum should be held on whether the presidency should be done away with or not,” he said.

“The New Rights won’t withdraw its candidate on anyone’s behalf”

Sakartvelos Respublika writes that the oppositional New Rights party have pledged to keep their candidate, party leader Davit Gamkrelidze, in the presidential race.

On November 19, New Rights MP Pikria Chikhradze stated some had speculated they would pull out their candidate and back another opposition candidate. That won’t happen in the first round, she said—but if no one gets a majority of the vote and the election goes to a run-off, her party will throw its support behind the opposition candidate.

“I want to explain that our party will struggle to defeat Saakashvili, and if the second round of the elections is held we will support the opposition candidate,” Chikhradze stressed.

She added that the New Rights support the idea of decreasing presidential power.

“I want to underline that we are not going to maintain the exiting presidential governing model [if we win]. We will change the constitution, but we will give people opportunity to choose. The voters should select which governing model they prefer: presidential, parliamentary or a constitutional monarchy system,” Chikhradze said.
