Tbilisi Court of Appeals Considers Riot Case of Tbilisi Jail No. 5
On Monday, July 23 the Tbilisi Court of Appeals started considering the case regarding the riot in Tbilisi jail No. 5 on March 27, 2006.
On April 2, persons accused of organizing the riot were sentenced to different terms of imprisonment on April 2 by the Tbilisi city court.
Paata Mamardashvili was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment, Levan Tsindeliani – to 10 years, Nikoloz Makharadze – to 7 years imprisonment, Malkhaz Zedelashvili, Zurab Vibliani and Giorgi Avaliani to 6 years imprisonment.
All of them, except Levan Tsindeliani protested their verdicts. 
Representatives of NGOs, the opposition and relatives of prisoners blame the head of the Prison Department Bacho Akhalaia and high rank representatives for involvement in organization of the riot.
According to official information, as a result of the special operation aimed at suppressing the riot in Tbilisi jail No. 5, 7 prisoners were killed and 22 taken to the hospital.

Burjanadze Visits Patriot Camp Near Abkhaz Conflict Zone
On July 23, Speaker of Parliament Nino Burjanadze left for Zugdidi where she intended to visit the summer young patriot camp in the village Ganmukhuri (near the administrative border with Abkhazia).
Over 500 young people, including some from the Georgian–Ossetian conflict zone are having a rest in the camp in Ganmukhuri.
The first flow of children from Telavi and Kutaisi went to the camp on May 24. The official opening of the camp was held on May 26- Georgian Independence Day where President Mikheil Saakashvili was present.
Deputy Minister of Culture, Monument Protection and Sport Vladimir Vardzelashvili informed eight summer sport-patriot camps would be held in Georgia in 2007.  They will be located near health resorts in the village Ganmukhuri, in the village Kvavilnari (Guria province), in Vartsikhe, Lagodekhi, Sagarejo (Kakheti province) on Bazaleti Lake and in Skuri (Samegrelo province).
Camps will finish October 10. 30-35 000 young people ages 15 to 22 will have taken part in them. Young people attend the camps free of charge. The camps include residential facilities, showers, sport grounds and even a cinema are provided for them. Sport competitions and a disco will be organized.
Applications are accepted by local administrations in all regions and cities of Georgia. According to Vardzelashvili, preference will be given to children from socially unprotected families and IDPs from Abkhazia.

Georgian and British Military Doctors to Train Tasks Characteristic for Combat Actions
On July 23 the conference on planning exercises “Georgian Express-2007” opened in the Defense Ministry, representatives of the armed forces of Great Britain will participate in the exercises. The exercises would begin on August 25 and will last through September 9.
160 military doctors of the armed forces of Great Britain will come to Georgia in August to participate in the exercises. Together with Georgian colleagues they will train Georgian doctors how to work during large scale military actions, including how to render first aid in the battlefield and take wounded people from the field and bring them to hospitals.
After the exercises, the British military doctors will leave for Afghanistan to fulfill their  peacekeeping mission.

Police on Horses to Patrol Parts of Tbilisi
In Tbilisi police will patrol areas near Vake Park, Mziuri Park and Turtle Lake on horseback. 
A presentation of new uniforms for the horse patrols and the patrol police was held in Vake park. Interior Minister of Georgia Vano Merabishvili and Tbilisi mayor Gigi Ugulava attended the presentation.

Minister of Culture of Georgia Visits Sport Palace in Kutaisi
Minister of Culture, Monument Protection and Sport of Georgia Giorgi Gabashvili visited Kutaisi and familiarized himself with the construction of the Sport Palace in Kutaisi  (Western Georgia) on Monday, July 23. The Sport Palace is intended for 1700 people.
Construction of the palace is financed from the budget of the country, the palace is to be opened in autumn of the current year.
