Greece a transit country for Azerbaijani natural gas

Greece will be a transit country for Azerbaijani natural gas deliveries to Europe, reports the news agency Regnum. The announcement came after the Greek and Azerbaijani economic development ministers signed an agreement in Baku.

Azerbaijani officials also met with US representatives. Mathew Bryza, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, held talks with Natig Aliyev, Minister of Energy for Azerbaijan.

Bryza discussed US interest towards European energy security, saying that Washington supports healthy competition in the energy sector. Washington has said it is unacceptable for energy supplies to be used as political leverage.

Bryza stressed the significance of Azerbaijan's role in providing Europe with a stable energy supply, welcoming the prospect of gas deliveries from the Shah Deniz gas field in Azerbaijan to Greece, Italy and other European countries.

He talked of creating a broader energy security area which will include Azerbaijan, Georgia Ukraine and eastern European countries.
