EBRD and MFO Credo boost Georgia’s micro enterprises

The EBRD is lending USD 1.5 million to the microfinance organization Credo.

The credit line will be used to provide local micro entrepreneurs with access to longer-term financing for agricultural and tourism business, as well as individual, urban and household loans, focusing on regions outside of the capital.

Established in 1997 by World Vision International, Credo is a leading micro finance institution (MFI) ranked second by size of its loan portfolio in Georgia, where it has ten branches.

EBRD said the loan will enable Credo to implement expansion plans and increase lending operations, creating more opportunities for the smallest of borrowers in Georgia’s rural areas.

The potential market for micro lending in rural Georgia is large, said Michael Davey, EBRD director for the Caucasus. Despite growing competition between banks, it continues to remain the most underserved market segment, he said.
