“Mikheil Svimonishvili refuses to become an ambassador to Switzerland”

The former Guria governor has turned down an appointment as ambassador to Switzerland, Rezonansi reports.

Mikheil Svimonishvili said he would prefer to work in Georgia.

“I want to say that I remain in President Mikheil Saakashvili’s team,” Svimonishvili said.

The newspaper suggests that Svimonishvili may run as an MP. He did not comment on the possibility.



“Tbilisi International Airport’s runway to be reconstructed”

Akhali Taoba reports that the government is planning to redo Tbilisi International Airport’s runway.

Economic Development Minister Eka Sharashidze told reporters there are two options: reconstructing the current one or building a new one.

“As soon as the government gets acquainted with the details of the projects, it will decide which variant to approve,” Sharashidze said.



“Labor Party to take part in the parliamentary elections”

Sakartvelos Respublika reports that the oppositional Labor Party will compete in the May 21 parliamentary elections.

Labor had previously called for a boycott of the elections, but on March 26 a party representative confirmed that they would run after other opposition parties declined to join the boycott.

“As our initiation was ignored, now we call on everyone to vote for the only trustworthy and powerful party, the Labor Party, and its leader, Shalva Natelashvili. We promise you that we will never deceive our people,” the party representative said.



Tskhinvali accuses Tbilisi of blocking roads”

Separatist officials in breakaway South Ossetia are accusing Georgian authorities of blockading the road leading into secessionist-controlled portions of the region, Rezonansi reports.

“The Georgian side is increasing the military contingent on the Georgian-Ossetian border. The highway is totally blocked, and the locals are in a very bad situation,” a separatist official reportedly said on March 26. According to the de facto official, locals cannot get everyday goods or medical supplies.

Georgian officials say police are only checking cargo to crackdown on smuggling, not blocking the road.



“Georgian citizen arrested in St Petersburg”

Akhali Taoba reports that St Petersburg police arrested a Georgian citizen on March 26 on suspicion of robbery.

Russian police allege the arrested Georgian is part of a gang which robbed eight flats in the city. The suspect faces eight years’ imprisonment if found guilty.



“Residents of villages in Kaspi region to receive vouchers for 20 liters of diesel”

Sakartvelos Respublika reports that villagers in the district of Kaspi, near Tbilisi, are receiving government assistance vouchers as part of the 50-day presidential program to fight poverty.

Each family gets a voucher for 20 liters of diesel, according to the paper.
