International day against drugs observed in Georgia

Prominent Georgian leaders gathered yesterday to mark an international anti-drug day.

Health Minister Aleksandre Kvitashvili and a drug research institute director spoke about efforts to combat drug distribution, and ongoing treatment and rehabilitation efforts.

Tskhinvali claims Ossetian villages face by disaster after Georgian blockade

The separatist leadership of breakaway South Ossetia say that Georgian forces are precipitating a humanitarian disaster by blockading separatist-controlled villages.

“Ossetian vehicles are searched, foodstuffs and necessaries are seized at the illegal Georgian police posts,” said the South Ossetia separatist press service in the de facto capital of Tskhinvali.

The press service said Georgian police have set up 20 posts in the region. (Black Sea Press)



Georgian police officer arrested for bribery

Interior Ministry officers arrested a police major suspected of bribe-taking yesterday.

Giorgi Gvenetadze is accused of taking a bribe of GEL 1000 in exchange for letting a detainee avoid taking a drug test.

If found guilty, he could face nine years’ imprisonment. (Black Sea Press)



Condoleezza Rice to visit Tbilisi

Deputy Prime Minister Giorgi Baramidze said yesterday that an upcoming visit to Tbilisi by US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice is a key event in the light of Russian aggression.

“The escalation of tension has been the result of Russia’s aggressive actions in Georgia. The USA plays an important role in the global security system. Thus, the visit of Condoleezza Rice is of particular importance,” Baramidze told journalists after a government session yesterday.

Condoleezza Rice is expected to visit Tbilisi on July 9. According to the deputy prime minister, the details are still being decided. Rice first visited Georgia in 2005 when she accompanied US President George W. Bush. (Black Sea Press)
