Iran is opposed to developing a new pipeline on the bed of the Caspian, and says that such a project is a threat to the Sea’s unique ecological system. It recommends instead using the existing routes of energy transportation, those which pass through Russia and Iran.

Putting pipelines on the bed of the Caspian is a project supported by the West and US as a means of transporting Central Asian countries’ oil and gas to Europe via Azerbaijan and Georgia. This would enable it to use alternative to Russian and Iranian transport routes.
