Georgia should remain an alternative transit route

Wednesday, September 24
Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolamek has recommended that the EU assists Georgia by granting it more money to rehabilitate its infrastructure. He maintains that if this is not done Georgia might lose its position as an alternative route for oil and gas supply to Europe.

Speaking to the Spanish media, Topolamek also expressed his regret that Georgia and Ukraine have not yet been granted the official status of candidates to enter the NATO alliance.

The EU is actively assisting Georgia and ready to allot the country Euro 500 million, as decided on September 15. The first tranche of this, Euro 100 million, will be received in the near future. The rehabilitation of the infrastructure now depends on how efficiently the money will be spent by the Georgian Government.
