Agricultural imports increase

The Chairman of the Green Party Gia Gachechiladze thinks that state officials are lobbying for more imports into Georgia. He considers this a corrupt move, targeted at enriching a small group of “businessmen” who import cheap and low quality products and therefore hinder local production. The result has been catastrophic for the county’s agriculture.

Over the last 5 years imports of potatoes have increased 6.5 times, vegetables 11 fold, pork 5.5 fold and beef, poultry, sugar and food oil imports have also increased. This has resulted in a 20% decrease in the domestic production of cattle and a 50% drop in poultry production, while production of beef, pork, lamb, milk as the growing of potatoes, corn, beans, vegetables, sunflowers and wheat have also decreased dramatically. This tendency shows no sign of diminishing.
