Heavy rain inflicts serious damage on districts of Tbilisi

A natural disaster inflicted serious damage on almost all the districts of Tbilisi on Saturday night. The emergency office was working all night long. Rain flooded the ground floors of apartments and roads and cars were unable to move due to the heavy rain and hail.

The Dighomi district was damaged most of all. A Toyota Jeep fell into a trench as it was trying to turn on a road saturated with rain. Traffic jams were created on the roads due to the sudden flood.

Traffic movement was restricted and the Patrol Police were trying to regulate it. People at home during the rain had some problems as well. The cellars of almost all blocks were flooded in Dighomi.

Cars left in the open air were also damaged by the flood and hail. The roads were damaged when the flood washed road metals onto the streets which restricted traffic movement. The Vake-Saburtalo municipal office of cleaning was working the whole night. Clean up operations were taking place in almost all districts of Tbilisi. In some places, special equipment was used to clean the streets of road metals.

The flood killed three people in Telavi when the river flooded in the village of Shalauri and threw an Opel car from the bridge. Three people in the car at the time couldn’t escape from it. The bodies of 18-year old Mari Daghelishvili, 18-year old Mari Askilashvili and 37-year old Nana Grdzelishvili have been recovered.
