Control of genetic production

The issue of introducing genetically modified products to Georgia has been raised in Parliament. MP Giorgi Goguadze has initiated a draft law which says the introduction of genetically modified seeds, eggs, saplings and roe should be banned and other such products must be sold with a warning which lets the consumer know what they are buying.

Goguadze thinks that genetically modified organisms are much stronger than organic ones and a threat to them. Until recently Georgia was among the 25 countries with a unique biodiversity. Government members are in favour of the idea of marking genetically modified products but against banning them. They say this is pointless as it is impossible to impose biological borders.
