Europe needs not only natural gas but also oil supply diversification to maintain its energy independence, Romanian Euro MP Elena Basescu has stated. Basescu is the younger daughter of President of Romania Traian Basescu.

The MEP hailed the NABUCCO construction agreement signed in July but urged Europeans to remember that natural gas is not the only energy resource EU countries need. She said that Europe also needs to diversify the routes and sources of supply of its oil as well, highlighting the significance of the Constantia–Trieste oil pipeline. This project envisages transporting oil from Supsa to Constantia by tanker and on to Trieste by pipeline through Romania, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia. In Italy it will connect with the Trans Alpine oil pipeline which will pump oil further to Austria and Germany. This project was agreed in 2006 and construction should be finished by 2012.
