The amount of Kazakh oil transported through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline is increasing. In January-September 2009 BTC transported 1.3 million tonnes of Kazakh oil, far more than it did last year. In October last year Chevron Texaco started transporting Kazakh oil from the Tangiz oil field through BTC and by rail to the Georgian ports of Kulevi and Batumi.

A number of different companies have shares in BTC. The Kulevi terminal however is wholly owned by SOCAR, the state oil company of Azerbaijan, and the Batumi terminal by KazMunaiGas, the Kazakhstan state company.
