Threat that Ukraine may become a federation

One of the candidates for the Ukrainian Presidency, Mayor of Uzhgorod Sergey Ratushniak, stated recently that if Ukraine is not transformed into a federation it could soon disintegrate into 6 sovereign states. According to him practically every Ukrainian region represents a subculture and Ukraine’s existence as a state should be based on recognition of this diversity.

Ratushniak highlighted the serious separatist sentiments in different regions which the country’s leadership should take into account, as reported by Russian news agency Regnum on December 7.
