Iranís activities in the Caucasus

Tuesday, January 12As is known Azerbaijanís Foreign Minister, Edmar Mamedyarov, has suggested that Iran could become a mediator in resolving the Karabakh conflict. However increasing Tehranís participation in resolving the conflict very much depends on the position of the OSCE Minsk group members, Russia, the USA and France.
Today Azerbaijan depends on the West and close contacts with Iran could damage the Azeri position in the West, so Bakuís initiative could be evaluated as merely a political gesture. It is understandable that Iran is very happy to return to being a player in the Caucasus region, but very intensive development of economic relations between Iran and Armenia has begun, so it is unlikely that Iran will make any decisions in favour of Baku which will greatly contradict Yerevan's interests.
