There is a special monitoring service in Georgia which checks the quality of food products. This organisation checked 1,945 samples of 34 kinds of products in 2009 including drinking water. 320 samples were defective, including 30 counterfeit wines.

Statistics show that there has been an increase in food poisoning cases in Georgia. In 2008 1,460 persons were treated for food poisoning, but in 2009 it was 1,583. There are no effective ways of preventing this apart from food quality monitoring.
