Iran hopes that it will be able to buy more Azeri gas. At present it receives1.2 million cubic metres daily, but this total might increase to 14 million cubic metres. Constructing another pipeline is the only way this increase can be achieved.

In January 2010 the Azeri SOCAR and Iran's NIGEC signed a short term agreement in Baku, under which Azeri gas is supplied to the northern parts of Iran. The contract runs until April but Iran hopes that a longer term deal will be signed. Iran is prepared to purchase up to 5 billion cubic metres of Azeri gas.

At present Azerbaijan and Iran are connected by one natural gas pipeline, the Gazi-Magomed-Astara-Bind-Biandi.
