On June 17 Turkish Airlines began making three flights a week from Istanbul to Nakhchevan. Ankara also plans to construct a railway connection between Turkey and Nakhchevan which will be extended to the Iranian border.

Turkish Minister of Transport Binali Yildirim has called this project the "modern silk road segment". It will eventually cost USD 600 million.

Nakhchevan is an autonomous region of Azerbaijan divided from the rest of the country by Armenia. By implementing this project Turkey will be able to establish connections with not only Iran but Turkmenistan and Pakistan.
