The recently concluded agreement between Azerbaijan and Turkey on the extraction, sale and transport of natural gas from the second stage of the Shah Deniz field has given both countries new opportunities to sell this gas worldwide, as it can be transported trough Turkey to Europe.

The second stage of the Shah Deniz field will start functioning at full capacity by 2016. Details of the deal are not yet available but it appears that the sale price is comfortable for both sides, being greater than in previous deals, thus more profitable for Azerbaijan, but lower than Turkey pays for Russian gas.

The SOCAR management promises to increase the production of Azeri gas in the next few years. The shareholders of the Shah Deniz gas field include BP, Statoil, Lukoil and Total.
