Draft Constitution aired in Batumi

Wednesday, August 11
On August 10 in Batumi a public airing of the Draft Constitution was opened with a minute's silence to commemorate the heroes who perished as a result of Russian aggression in 2008.

This time around, consideration of the new Draft Constitution was held at the Shota Rustaveli State University in Batumi. The supreme law of the country was introduced to the students and lecturers of the University by Chairman of the Parliament, David Bakradze and members of the Public-Universal Commission.

David Bakradze introduced the Draft Constitution in detail to the audience. He mentioned that everybody's opinion is of the utmost importance for the finalisation of the Constitution as it will serve the needs and demands of people, their rights and protection of their freedom.

"The new constitution will include a balanced mechanism of governmental branches, in line with the traditional European Constitutional model. The institutions of the President, the Government and the Parliament will have the balance of power and all the three branches will be represented with the equal power” – David Bakradze stated.

According to his information, rules for staffing the newly formed Government will be the prerogative of the elected political party. "Political parties will have more motivation to participate in the elections as the winning party will staff the cabinet of the Government. Correspondingly, the boycotting of elections by political parties will be senseless” – the Chairman of the Parliament noted.

According to information of the Chairman of the State Constitutional Commission, Avtandil Demetrashvili, Georgian lawyers and political parties as well as NGOs and foreign experts have been actively participating in the preparation process of the Constitution.

The meeting was held in question-answer format. The students were interested in the methods of assessing power among the governmental branches and also in the institutions of the Supreme Legislative Body and the Prime-minister.

Remarks and proposals made at the meeting in the University will be considered during the Parliamentary sittings.
