Georgian Scientists Invented Unique Geological Multifunction Technique

Thursday, September 30
Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, Dimitri Shashkin and Rector of Ilia State University, Gigi Tevzadze visited Earth Sciences Institute and got familiarized with the unique geological multifunction techniques of GMSYS 2009 that was invented by Georgian scientists.

The instrument that was created by Georgian geophysicists includes three main components. It can be used for seismic observations as well as in the fields of geophysics, environment protection and safety. It differs from similar foreign devices with its flexibility, low cost and opportunities for modernization.

NATO and its member countries have already purchased the system invented by Georgian scientists. The USA and Turkey expressed their willingness to buy it as well.

“A Georgian technological production gained international and strategic recognition. Establishing technoparks is important for the development of Georgian science. Georgian scientists will be able to patent their inventions as well as make products at the site. Technoparks will create additional vacancies and also raise the financing of scientists”-noted Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, Dimitri Shashkini.

The Institute also conducts research in the field of natural sciences, observes earthquakes, assesses seismic danger and implements scientific and practical works. The institution receives information from 10 seismic stations (Oni, Akhalkalaki, Kashkhali of Enguri, Davit Gareji, Dusheti, Ninotsminda) and several stations of Tbilisi as well as neighboring countries and international stations online. Institute immediately informs Municipal Department of Emergency Situation about the earthquake.

The seismic network of Earth Sciences Institute of Ilia State University consists of 30 stations. The number of stations will increase to 40 by the end of the year.
