Research carried out by the military analytical research centre in Baku states that Georgia is clear cut NATO oriented, Armenia clear cut Russian oriented while Azerbaijan has been changing its position and priorities for the last 19 years. The research also highlights three stages of Russia-NATO relations. During the first stage from 1991-2000 Moscow lost its influence over Eastern Europe, while NATO became involved in Balkans. 2000-2008 saw the second stage of these relations when NATO implemented its eastward enlargement policy, irritating Russia. The third stage is post 08/08/08, when Georgia’s chances of NATO membership have almost disappeared.
