The 20th Anniversary of Lithuania's Declaration of Independence

In connection with the 20-th anniversary of Lithuania’s independence David Bakradze, the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia and Jonas Paslauskas, the Ambassador of Lithuania to Georgia adorned the memorial of the 9-th April with the wreath and paid tribute to the memory of the deceased on 9 April 1989 for the independence of Georgia with a minute of silence.

On 13 January 1991 in Vilnius after 9 months from the declaration of independence the Soviet army attempted to seize independence of Lithuania by forcible methods that victimized 14 lives of civilians.

According to David Bakradze, the dissolution of the Soviet Union was the result of heroism of the people who deceased in the battle for independence of Lithuania and Georgia.

"Today we are paying tribute to the memory of those people who deceased in the battle for independence of Lithuania. The struggle for independence was ongoing in Georgia in parallel with the processes in Lithuania. "The collapse of the Soviet Union and the present independence of Lithuania and Georgia was determined by the heroism of the deceased during those struggles”,-David Bakradze stated.

The Chairman of the Parliament and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary lit a bonfire in accordance with Lithuanian traditions. Along with the Chairman of the Parliament the MPs, the Secretary of the Security Council Giorgi Bokeria, and Mirza Davitaia, the State Minister on the Diaspora Issues attended the event.
