Saakashvili Tours New Hospital

Wednesday, September 14
The President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, has visited a newly-opened multi-purpose "New Hospital," the construction of which was financed by the PSP Group to the tune of 24 mln euro. Along with the president, the Minister of Labor, Health and Social Affairs, Andria Urushadze, and the Chairman of the Parliamentary Healthcare Committee, Gigi Tsereteli, inspected the new hospital. Mikheil Saakashvili talked with the patients and the personnel of the hospital, which is equipped with modern technologies.

The president also inspected the ultra-modern medical equipment, surgical wards and the hospital's dining room. Saakashvili praised the improved system of patient care and stated that medical care should be available to all Georgian citizens.

"Our best experts and investors have built a clinic which we could only dream of in the past. I am looking forward to the time when people will no longer go abroad for medical treatment. On the contrary, you have seen for yourself that foreigners come here for treatment. One of the most important parts of tourism is medical tourism, which should be developed in Georgia as well as for example, in Switzerland and Austria. We have great potential, because of our highly qualified doctors, many of which are able to speak a foreign language. The availability of medical treatment to every citizen of Georgia is also of great importance. This hospital was not built because we want to put its picture on postcards. It was built so that people can receive medical care without selling off all of their assets. A high level of medical care is expensive, but we have to work hard to solve a large part of this problem for our society,” stated the president.

During his statement, the president mentioned the "100-hospital program" and also noted that the actual number of these hospitals is much higher now, up to 150. The president said that in spite of the war and the financial crisis, promises are being kept and hospitals will soon be made available for everyone.

In terms of medical equipment and physical construction the "New Hospital" has no comparison in Georgia. The hospital has seven operating blocks: neurosurgery, cardio surgery, ophthalmology, general surgery, urology, orthopedics, traumatology and endovideosurgery.

In addition, the facility can provide 1,000 ambulatory patients with high-level medical service on a daily basis.

The hospital employs 372 people currently, but this figure will reach 500 when the hospital becomes completely operational.
