Turkey can annul the contract with Russia concerning the natural gas supply from Russia into Turkey if the prices are not considerably decreased. The statement over this issue was made by the Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. Every year Turkey buys from Russia 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas which is up to 64% of the county’s annual consumption.

The issue was touched upon already in March 2011 in Moscow during a meeting and negotiations between President Medvedev of Russia and Turkish PM Erdogan. However, no consensus was reached. Another supply source for Turkey in terms of natural gas is Iran but currently there are problems between the two countries. So far the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzrum gas pipeline is the only source of providing Turkey with gas in stable, and satisfactory manner for Ankara.
