Professional Education Launched in Prisons

A new reform, entitled Professional Education, has been launched in the Georgian penitentiary system.

Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance, Khatuna Kalmakhelidze, inaugurated the first Educational House in Rustavi ¹16 Penitentiary Establishment, which has been built with financial support of the Norwegian Mission of Rule of Law Advisers to Georgia (NORLAG).

In the framework of memorandums with various universities, professors will teach different classes to inmates, who will have the possibility to learn accounting, business management, foreign languages, and different handcrafts.

After the completion of their studies, inmates will be awarded with certificates that they can use after release.

The inauguration was also attended by the head of the parliamentary committee for the protection of Human Rights–Lasha Todria, Rectors of the Technical University and Guram Tavartkiladze University, representatives of NORLAG and the Embassy of the United States.

The necessary infrastructure for educational houses is being built in two other penitentiary establishments.
