Russia's chief sanitary doctor Genady Onishchenko, who in 2006 banned Georgian wines from the Russian market, is ready to approve imported wines into Russia. Georgian officials have not made any additional moves, however certain opposition entities have been active recently by promoting Georgian wines in Russia. Nevertheless Onishenko recently said that seven wine producing companies have informed him about their readiness to start exporting wine into Russia. “You are welcome to enter the Russian market and you know the conditions,” said Onishchenko. Most of the Georgian winemakers however are waiting for Russian importers who would invite and import Georgian wines into Russia.
