Candidate of Georgia Elected Member of CAT

On October 18 the 13th meeting of the States Parties to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment was held in Geneva, Switzerland to elect 5 new members of the Committee against Torture (CAT). Georgia presented the candidacy of Public Defender (Ombudsman) of Georgia, George Tugushi. With 97 votes, the candidate of Georgia was elected as a member of the committee for the term 2012-2015. Other elected members of the CAT are Chile (111 votes), Mauritius (105 votes), United States of America (82 votes) and Senegal (72 votes).

The Committee against Torture is a body of 10 independent experts, which monitors the implementation of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment by its State Parties.
