Patriarch requests the restitution of Georgian citizenship for Ivanishvili

Mteli Kvira writes that Ilya II, Catholicos Patriarch of All Georgia said on Sunday that Bidzina Ivanishvili should have Georgian citizenship, and expressed his hope that the President would consider his opinion.

An MP from the ruling party, Nugzar Tsiklauri, said that Ivanishvili now has a case in the Court about it and he is sure the politician will not win the case. However Tsiklauri said that Ivanishvili can appeal to the President with a special request to grant Georgian citizenship, although this MP avoided answering about whether he thought Saakashvili would grant citizenship if Ivanishvili asked.

Political analyst Ramaz Sakvarelidze says that it isn't surprising that the Patriarch stated his position on this issue and it does not mean that the Patriarch supports the Government necessarily. His position is understandable since Ivanishvili contributed significantly by restoring different churches and especially for the construction of the Sameba Cathedral.

Science Day celebrated in Georgia

The Ministry of Education and Science congratulated Georgian scientists on the International Day of Science and granted certificates to the winners of a science-research internship competition, 24 Hours reports.

In the framework of the 2011 internship grant competition of the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation, 28 young scientists will have the opportunity to enhance their qualifications within leading foreign research institutions. This Georgian foundation has been conducting multiple grant competitions in scientific circles to encourage young scientists and assist them in developing their skills and enhancing their qualifications. According to the General Director of the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation, Sulkhan Sisauri, the success of the program is obvious based on the number of participants in the competition.

The Foundation has been holding the science-research internship competition since 2009. Young Georgian scientists’ trips abroad will be financed from the state budget in the range of 250,000 GEL.
