A dispute over the status of the Caspian Sea is ongoing. All five Caspian states – Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan – have been unable to determine where national boundaries are to be drawn across (and below) the sea. New reserves of oil and gas found in the Caspian have complicated each country's claims, as the current agreement has not been updated since the four states were members of the Soviet Union.
