Georgians consuming fewer eggs

Statistics show that in 2011, Georgians consumed fewer eggs than they have in the last five years.

Some analysts suggest that this is due to the poor quality of eggs available in Georgia.

Officially, there are more than 20 large- and medium-sized poultry-breeding enterprises across the country, and approximately 1500 small enterprises, all employing more than 10 000 people across the country.

More than 50% of poultry and 70% of eggs sold in Georgia are locally produced. In 2011, Georgia imported approximately $1.6 million USD worth of eggs, primarily from Iran and Turkey. The National Statistic Office reports that last year, Georgia produced 427 million eggs, slightly less than in 2010.
