Gigi Tsereteli met with the Head of the UNODC Representation to Georgia

Thursday, March 22
Gigi Tsereteli met with the Head of UNODC Representation to Georgia, Signe Rotberga. This organization works in 5 directions: organized crime and trafficking, corruption, criminal law reform, health and life and prevention of terrorism. In Georgia, UNODC actively cooperates with the Police Academy (relevant trainings), Customs Department and all the structures, related to illegal import of narcotics. Also, UNODC facilitates active involvement of Georgia in the international cooperation network.

Mrs. Rotberga was interested in legislative changes, consideration of which is actively held in Parliament. As Tsereteli noted, the coordinated and effective struggle against drug-addition entailed the positive outcome. Though, the policy is being changed on the next stage and from the severe repressive measures the emphasis will be made on treatment and rehabilitation of drug-addition. Correspondingly, the major part of the penalty sanctions will be consumed on these programs. Support by UNODC is very important as in development of the specific treatment-rehabilitation projects, so in elaboration of the relevant national strategy.

At the meeting, the parties agreed on further enhancement of cooperation.
