Trans-Caspian gas pipeline problem for Russian allies

Thursday, April 12
The proposed Trans-Caspian natural gas pipeline project is opposed by the Russian government, and creating mixed feelings among its former Soviet republics. The pipeline, supported by states like Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Ukraine, would bypass Russia on its way to supply Europe with gas.

The issue has put some Russian allies in an uncomfortable position. Belarus has an energy shortage and so far only consumes Russian oil and gas, but has recently made noises that it is prepared to buy from other countries. Similarly, Kazakhstan is currently only selling oil to Russia, but may have an alternate market if the pipeline is built.
