The overwhelming majority of Azeri citizens support current President Ilham Aliev. A recent poll shows that if the elections were held tomorrow, Aliev would receive 91% of the vote. Most of the respondents said that there is no alternative to Aliev, who became President in 2003, at the moment after the death of his father president Geidar Aliev.

After he was re-elected in 2008, a referendum was held which allows a president to run for election as many times as he or she chooses.
