UN National Action Plan on women enacted in Georgia

Tuesday, May 1
A meeting of the National Coordination Group on the "National Action Plan for 2012-2015 on implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions 1325, 1820, 1888, 1889 and 1960 on Women, Peace and Security” was held at Georgia's Parliament yesterday.

The meeting was organized by the Gender Equality Council and the UN Women Organization. Members of the Coordination Group spoke about the activities, implemented within the National Action Plan, directed at facilitation of women's participation in security and peace-building and the consideration of women's needs in conflict prevention.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Chair of the Gender Equality Council Rusudan Kervalishvili introduced the results of surveys conducted by the National Democratic Institute on gender issues. She noted that the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights and the Venice Commission have made recommendations to Georgia aimed at increasing the participation of women on every decision-making level.

She spoke about the changes, subject to introduction to the Criminal Code of Georgia, which she personally initiated. Part of this was the necessary criminalization of domestic violence, due to the high level of spousal abuse in Georgia. As she said, adoption of changes to the Code will facilitate an adequate response to domestic violence and will prevent such abuse.

Representatives from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, the National Security Council, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Reintegration, and the civil sector also made presentations on the implementation of the National Action Plan within Georgia.

Kervalishvili also announced that she, along with representatives of NGOs, will attend the Conference on Implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution N 1325 "On Women, Peace and Security” in Belgium. They will deliver a speech on the National Action Plan, using the experience of the South Caucasus as an example.
