Increased infant mortality due to tobacco use among pregnant women

Rezonansi writes that in recent years, smoking rates among pregnant women in Georgia is approaching a dangerous level. Currently 32% of pregnant women, or every third pregnant woman, is a smoker– this is both dangerous for the woman and the baby. The Tobacco Control Alliance from the government prohibits tobacco advertising and requires strict legislation. Parliament however has not yet started work on these issues. During the last 5 years, smoking among young girls has increased 2.5 times. Consequently, this has increased the Infant mortality, birth rate and premature and low birth-weight number for infants.



Young lawyers demand reactions on prostitution facts

Rezonansi reports that the Young Lawyers Association demand adequate government bodies to make a reaction on prostitution and trafficking facts fixed in Black Sea coastal towns.

Lawyers say that in Batumi, Gonio and Kobuleti there are many motel-type buildings where prostitution happens. According to them, the major owners of those places are Turkish citizens and Turks. Uzbeks, Kazakhs and Ukrainian and Azeri girls are working as a result of trafficking. Overall, as lawyers claim, their number is about 500.

As organization Head, Achiko Kaikatsishvili remarks, there are victims of trafficking who committed suicide.
